In Indian territory 1877, when prejudices about people with darker skin was absurd and accepted by most, a white missionary was sent by the American Baptist Mission Board of New York to organize Antioch Church. His name was Reverend Daniel Rogers and with a grant of $500 was able to start construction. Aas he was a circuit preacher, services were not held on a regular basis. With the cooperation of the church and community, construction was completed and dedicated in 1879. People came from as far away as Park Hill, in buggies, wagons, and some on foot. Some of the services were conducted in Cherokee. Baptism was held at the Village Springs Stream, which is on the site of Northeastern State University College Campus.
The church was rebuilt in 1906 under the leadership of Rev. Teamer. The current building was rebuilt in November 4, 1962 under the guidance of Rev. P.D. Davis.
Since 1877 this church has seen twenty seven pastors, countless deacons, laymen, and mothers of the church who have been instrumental in carrying on God's work in this community.
On January 19, 1997 (the eve of Martin Luther King Day) the church was fire bombed. The Tahlequah community came together to help clean up the damages. On January 23, 1997 the Say No To Hate Coalition was formed. Antioch has had numerous repairs since 1997.
We've had many members come and go including some NSU students. Antioch has been blessed with donations of sound and music equipment to help in our services. With God's blessings and the help of our new Pastor Vernell Racy & wife Vickie, Antioch is moving forward. Pastor Racy has encouraged us to know that the answer to our life problems are "IN THE BOOK"! Our membership is growing and we, the faithful few are yet holding on!
